Sine-dwell
Sine-dwell testing / FMVSS126 / ECE Reg 13H / Euro NCAP ESC test
The sine-dwell test can only be performed with a steering robot.
The sine-dwell procedure calls for a very rapid steering input which no human driver can perform. AB Dynamics’ range of steering robots includes several which are widely used for the sine-dwell test.

Test requirements
The sine-dwell test has a steering input defined in terms of angle against time. It is a steer + counter-steer manoeuvre such as might be applied by a panicked driver avoiding an obstacle in the road.
The various procedures (FMVSS126, ECE Reg 13H and Euro NCAP ESC test) are all similar, and require a sequence of tests to be performed ending with the sine-dwell manoeuvre. AB Dynamics’ RC software includes special groups to guide users through the procedures.

Suitable robots
High angular velocity and acceleration is required at the steering wheel, meaning that steer torque of 40-60Nm is generally required to follow the required profile. AB Dynamics has a range of steering robots suitable for doing this, including the SR60, the SR60 Orbit and the Torus.

Path-following Software
AB Dynamics’ path-following software can be used to guide the vehicle to precisely the desired location for the start of the sine-dwell test. This is particularly useful on tracks of restricted size, eliminating the stress of manually triggering the test.
